The Siberian weather continues, with overnight temperatures as low -16°C, with another snowfall overnight in some places in the UK as much as 35 centimetres but not so bad here at home.

The test match is also Siberian from the English point of view. South Africa declared at 447 for 7 leaving it almost impossible for England to win and most unlikely to survive for a draw.

With all the excitement of Christmas I do believe that I have forgotten to mention a milestone in my life. My dear wife insisted that I gave up driving in November. She accepted that I was safe on straight roads but very suspect when it came to bends, which is not a good recipe for safe driving. I gave up without a struggle as I realised that she was right. The problem was not so much grasping the steering wheel, as my fingers curled naturally with the MND, but it was the weakness in my arms, in particular the right one, which locked from time to time and would have made it difficult for me to swerve in an emergency. I would never have forgiven myself if, as a result, I was responsible for an accident. In the event Alice sold my lovely old Rover for such a small amount of money I’m ashamed to mention it, but at least it went to a friend.

Another great escape for England in the test match. In a nail-biting finish, our number 11, Onions, survived the last 17 balls, to achieve a draw, which means that England cannot now lose the series.

I went to London today to the Law Court Branch of the Arbitration Club Lunch. I drove to Bishop’s Stortford but on the way decided to fill up with petrol. Unable to lift the lever releasing the petrol cap and also being too weak to squeeze the pump, I asked a kindly looking customer for assistance when he had finished filling his own tank. Unfortunately, between the time of asking and his coming to assist I had managed to topple over backwards so, in fact, I had disappeared from his sight from the other side of my car. Fortunately for me he decided to investigate and found me lying prone. This is the fourth time this has happened so I suppose it must be something to do with loss of balance or weakness of legs which I must mention to the MND team when I see them next week. After this kind gentleman had helped me up and filled up my tank, on the way out I got him to push in my safety belt and turn the ignition key – both of which I find now almost impossible to do myself. By this stage he looked rather quizzical. I’m sure he was wondering whether I should be allowed on the road at all (or whether he was even on Candid Camera) however, I assured him that once I was on the move I was quite safe. I’m not sure that he really believed me.

At the Arbitration Club lunch one of the lady members was only too happy to fit my wrists supports and to cut up my food. On the whole I find most people are immensely helpful provided they are approached in the right manner.

I also took advantage of this trip to London to go into the Chinese Embassy to apply for my visa. What a performance. There was no way that I could get it in one day and therefore have to get back next week to pick it up, at the exorbitant cost of £64.50p.

I had to go into Saffron Walden this morning to have my eyes tested as the glasses l bought from Glasses Direct were not satisfactory. I drove myself but I really think my driving days may be coming to an end. I am O.K once I’m on the open road with my automatic, as my hands curl round the steering wheel and I can control the car. However, I struggled for over five minutes trying to plug in the safety belt before eliciting the assistance of a passer-by. I then had trouble turning the key in the ignition. All very frustrating.

I rang the District Nurse today and asked if there was someone who could come and cut my fingernails. I was told that although the NHS provide a free toenail cutting service they do not cut fingernails and that I would have to make a private arrangement. OK I can afford to pay somebody but what about other people on a fixed income who cannot afford to pay?

The District Nurse agreed with me that this was not a satisfactory state of affairs but that was a situation and there was nothing they could do about it. I think this is scandalous for poor people and therefore will raise the matter with my MP, Alan Hazlehurst.

In the meantime, having had this conversation, half an hour later the District Nurse rang to say that she had found someone who would pop in tomorrow to cut my nails for me. However, that does not solve the long-term problem for other people, so the MP will still get my letter.

I rang the Professor at Reading University again today about my bionic gloves. He explained that the problem is, to fund a research student for three years could cost up to half a million pounds, which, of course, is totally out of the question. In any event heaven knows where I shall be in three years time. The alternative is to find a Masters student who would make this the subject of their dissertation but unfortunately this process could not begin until next Easter. Again, an unsatisfactory time frame. In the meantime therefore I am seeking some charity who would fund the R&D for these gloves which undoubtedly would have universal appeal and be a great. benefit to mankind. Any suggestions of a charity, or philanthropists, from my readers would be welcome.
